  5. In January, 1990, UUNET Technologies launched AlterNet, a public 
  6. TCP/IP network service that offers an attractive option to 
  7. organizations seeking an Internet connection or an alternative to 
  8. providing their own private network, while gaining superior 
  9. connectivity to their domestic and international sites.
  10.  
  11. What are the advantages of AlterNet?
  12.  
  13. o    AlterNet is available to any subscriber, regardless of
  14.         government, academic, or commercial affiliation.
  15.  
  16. o    AlterNet provides unrestricted access to more networks
  17.         worldwide than any other network provider.
  18.  
  19. o    AlterNet does not impose restrictions on the type of traffic.
  20.  
  21. o    AlterNet offers your organization a way to gain your own wide
  22.         area network, so you don't have to plan, purchase, implement,
  23.         maintain, and support your own.

  25. o    AlterNet provides full service.

  60.         and Canada. Through these direct connections, NSF appropriate 
  61.         use policies do not apply.

  63. o    If your organization meets the NSF appropriate use qualifications,
  64.         NSFNET access is provided at no extra charge.

  67. What are the connection options?
  68.  
  69. o    T1 (1.5 mbps)
  70.  
  71.     T1 is targeted towards high volume subscribers who need high
  72.         throughput with very little delay.
  73.  
  74. o    T1-LV (Low Volume)
  75.  
  76.     Targeted towards subscribers who need the high speed of T1,
  77.         but not the bandwidth. A full T1 is available for your use,
  78.         but your average use is under 128 kbps. We monitor line use and
  79.         advise you if you approach the 128k limit.
  80.  
  81. o    56k to Anywhere
  82.  
  83.         Targeted towards subscribers with lower throughput
  84.         requirements. Available at every Sprint or Wiltel Point of 
  85.         Presence in the continental US (over 300 locations, and 24 
  86.         major cities).

  88. o    Subrate DDS (19.2 kbps or 9.6 kbps)
  89.  
  90.     This option is targeted to lower volume subscribers requiring
  91.         the reliability of a leased line, and seeking a lower cost
  92.         alternative to the 56k option.
  93.  
  94. o    Async SLIP or PPP (V.32 or V.32bis)
  95.  
  96.     This option provides a low-cost connection using SLIP or PPP.
  97.         Access is via leased line or dedicated dialup modem. This
  98.         option is offered for extremely low volume or non-interactive
  99.         uses.
  100.  
  101. Lower speed connections are not supported at all hubs. Please
  102. contact AlterNet for availability.

  105. What about equipment at my site?
  106.  
  107. Depending on your connection option, you may need a Cisco router and the 
  108. appropriate modems or CSU/DSUs. These are available for purchase or lease 
  109. from UUNET, or you may provide your own.

  112. What types of fees are involved?
  113.  
  114. Total costs vary based on your connection option, but in general, 
  115. costs are of two types:
  116.  
  117. o    One Time Costs
  118.  
  119.     -    Start Up Fee
  120.  
  121.             Covers hardware necessary for your connection at the
  122.                 AlterNet facility and part of the backbone
  123.                 equipment and AlterNet operations.
  124.  
  125.     -    Equipment 
  126.  
  127.             If you need equipment to connect to AlterNet,
  128.                 you may provide your own, purchase from us, or lease from
  129.                 us. Unlike some other suppliers, if you purchase equipment
  130.                 from UUNET, you own it.
  131.  
  132.     -    Line Installation
  133.  
  134.             This is a cost only if your chosen connection option
  135.                 requires a line installation fee. This charge varies by
  136.                 line vendor.
  137.  
  138. o    Recurring Costs
  139.  
  140.     -    AlterNet Service
  141.  
  142.             We bill you monthly for network management and other
  143.                 services.
  144.  
  145.     -    Line Cost
  146.  
  147.             This is the monthly cost of the line between your site
  148.                 and the closest AlterNet connection point.
  149.  
  150. o    No hidden fees! Fees are based solely on your chosen
  151.      connection option, not on your organization size or type.

  153.     -    No per-packet, kilosegment, or kilocharacter fee.

  155.     -    No membership fee or annual dues.

  175. original in to us.
